Tailscale: access your home network from anywhere

If you have a NAS or you have some self-hosted software running on a server at home, you know that as soon as you leave your house, you’re out of luck for connecting to those services. That’s something a VPN can solve, as it offers an entry point to your home network. One that I quite like is Wireguard , as it has been proven to not being easily-breakable. The issue is that having to do port-forwarding, configure Wireguard itself, sharing public-private keys between each device that you want to allow access to it… it’s quite a hassle.

Tailscale comes to solve all those issues. Tailscale is built on top of Wireguard, so it provides the trust that software already provides, and some user-friendly features to start using it as soon as possible.

With Tailscale, you only need to install the software on the machine you want to use as entry point, log in with SSO with one of quite a few providers available, and you’re done. It does hole punching, so you don’t need to do port-forwarding and leave your network always open. If you now want to enter your home network from your phone from anywhere, install Tailscale, log in with the same provider used before, and you’re done! I have some self-hosted software running on a Dell Wyse 5070 and it’s nice to have it available from anywhere.

Do you have this same issue I used to have? Try it and ask me if any concerns via LinkedIn or email. You won’t regret it.
